Bulletproof steel plates as raw materials for some large-scale equipment

The disadvantage is that the weight is too heavy, and when resisting high-grade bullets, the bulletproof performance cannot be compared with the ceramic composite insert: Because the steel plate is too hard, the projectile may shatter after hitting the surface, and the fragments can easily injure the user's jaw or arm. In more serious cases, it may ricochet, threatening the user and teammates. This is why ceramic and polyethylene backs/covers are now used even with steel cores.

And the weight of the bulletproof steel plate is very heavy. The 10X12 inch AR500 iron plate of NIJ III level (which can block 7.62X51 NATO M80 bullets) weighs a full 8 pounds. This is not a pure iron plate, but a steel core is used. The outer material and back plate are still ceramics and polyethylene, which makes it impossible to use steel plate as the main body armor material in personal combat.

And this does not affect the use of bulletproof steel plates as raw materials for some large-scale equipment, such as armored vehicles, submarines, anti-riot vehicles, etc. The characteristics of these equipment can often ignore the shortcomings of bulletproof steel plates and magnify the advantages of bulletproof steel plates.
