Types of Bulletproof Plates

  • Bulletproof plates are essential protective elements inserted into bulletproof vests to enhance safety during high-risk scenarios. Commonly worn by troops, police officers, and other law enforcement personnel during routine patrols, the use of Hard Bulletproof Plates becomes crucial in unfortunate circumstances like actual combats, shooting outbreaks, or street riots. Positioned as vital inserts in the front and back pockets of armor carriers, these plates can potentially save lives and prevent injuries.

  • Dimensions And Sizing

The weight and coverage of bulletproof plates are determined by their cut and size, with various types available in the market. SAPI cut, featuring two sloped cuts on the top corners, Full cut with its square or rectangular shape providing complete back protection, Shooter’s cut with a trapezoid shape enhancing agility, and Swimmer’s cut, similar to the shooter’s cut but with a smaller upper region for increased shoulder and upper back mobility.

The design of trauma plates aims to shield vital organs, such as the heart and lungs, rather than the entire body or torso. Hence, selecting the right size is crucial. Protective bulletproof plates come in various sizes, including small, medium, large, and extra-large, catering to a variety of body shapes.

  • Materials Used To Manufacture Bulletproof Plate

The efficacy of bulletproof plates in shielding users from bullets depends largely on the materials used, with ceramic and polymers being predominant choices.

Ceramic rifle plates, composed of ceramic tiles, halt projectiles by shattering them into pieces, reducing projectile penetration capacity. Supportive backing layers of Kevlar and steel serve as absorbent agents, preventing accidental ceramic breakage.

Ceramic plates have limited multi-hit resistance, as their brittle nature triggers breakage when impacted by bullets. The plate weakens with each bullet impact, resisting only a small number of rounds and eventually becoming inadequate to ensure wearer safety.

Polymers, such as Polyethylene plates, are a great complement for government and military officers, in addition to ceramic plates. Polyethylene, woven into a fabric that competes with modern aramid fabrics in strength, resilience, and weight, is commonly used in vests. Subjected to high-pressure treatment, Polyethylene enhances durability without the need for backing materials, providing an advantage in weight reduction.

Polyethylene plates do not fracture when struck by projectiles, making them a safer option for combat and similar high-risk occurrences. Consumers should note that Polyethylene plates are more expensive than ceramic plates. Nonetheless, for resilience and lightweight properties, concerns about protection are minimized.

Viscoelastic polymer compounds produced by various firms are in the limelight for their incredibly high energy dissipation during explosions and vibrations. The material and padding made from it derive superior energy-absorbing capacity from the distinctive physical properties of the viscoelastic compound.

  • Body armor is necessary for controlling blunt force trauma, a hazard to internal organs when pierced by blunt projectiles such as bullets. In high-risk scenarios, additional defense in the form of bulletproof plate inserts will prevent injuries or even death.
